You know you would feel better...healthier, stronger and have more energy if you could stay on track with nutrition and a healthy lifestyle but, you don’t really know how to get on track in the first place.
So, you do some research and learn that working with a health coach is the best option in order to keep you accountable and supported as well as educated and informed while working towards your goals.
But then you realize you have no idea how to find the coach that is right for you! When you do a Google search you come up with so many options and most of them sound pretty darn good. How do you go about picking a coach who is a good fit for you and your particular needs?
Here are 4 things to consider before making any investment into your health:
What are you actually struggling with?
It is incredibly important to be choosy when it comes to picking a health coach. Make sure you are clear on what you really need and start your search there. Most health coaches will specialize in one particular niche focusing on a specific issue or health condition. You would not want to choose a coach who specializes in nutrition for athletes training for a marathon if you are struggling with an autoimmune condition.
A good place to start your search is Google--be specific with your particular struggle or focus. Many health coaches also have pages on Facebook and Instagram where you can get a feel for their personality and area of work. If they have a free resource that is of value to you, usually an eBook, guide or video, then sign up for it to start getting a feel for their teaching style.
Does the coach have credentials from an accredited institution?
You want to know you are working with someone who has been properly trained in the areas of nutrition and holistic health and who knows what they are doing. Depending on where they are located, there are different levels of certification requirements for someone to call themselves a coach. You definitely want to make sure that the coach you pick is educated before you trust them with teaching you how to be healthy. Getting the wrong information could be harmful to you so make sure to do your research first so you can trust what you are being taught.
Do you feel comfortable talking with them during your consultation call?
Before working with a coach, you will want to do a consultation call with them. Most coaches offer a 15 to 30-minute screening call, called a discovery call or strategy session, for free. This call is to learn about what challenges or issues you are dealing with as well as to see if you are a good fit for their offerings whether that is a coaching session package, program or combination.
A good coach does not work with just everybody. Rather, they have a discussion with you to determine if it would be of value and helpful for you to work with them. During the call, the coach is determining if they can guide you to the transformation that you are looking for. If not, then they may be able to refer you to someone who is better suited to help you.
It is also important to feel comfortable talking with them and opening up because you will need to share life and health details, so they have the big picture and know exactly what they are working with. You will need to develop a reciprocal relationship of trust and be willing to be honest in order for the coaching to work. Don't be afraid to ask questions and definitely follow your gut intuition.
Also, the process of the call from scheduling to follow-up should be smooth and can help you determine how professional, organized and dedicated they are to doing the work with you. If they don't have a scheduling calendar for you to book with, aren't on time for the call, seem distracted or rushed, or don't follow up with you after then this gives you an idea of the person that you will be working with during your coaching relationship if you decide to hire them.
Do you admire them as a person?
Look past the shiny social media posts and emails. Can you get a feel for who they really are? Do you vibe with their core values? Do you consider them to be a good mentor?
It is so important to examine these aspects of the person that you will be taking health and life advice from. If you don't respect them or their opinion, then it is very likely that you will not get much from what they are teaching you or encouraging you to take action on. If that is the case, you will not be able to see results and will essentially be wasting your time and money.
Do your homework!
Choosing a health coach and program is an important decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Do your homework and take the time to get to know the person that you will be trusting as your guide and mentor in order to see results and a greater level of success for your investment into your health and future.
I hope these tips help!
